Carbon Analysis by UIC Coulometrics™ Carbon Dioxide Coulometer

This instrument measures inorganic and organic C in solid and aqueous phases by oxidizing samples (either by acidification or high temperature) to CO2 which combines with ethanolamine to form a strong titratable acid. The amount of acid formed is determined by base production and concomitant spectrophotometry. Total carbon (TC; 1030°C burn), total organic carbon (TOC), and total inorganic carbon (by acidification) can be determined from 2 ~10 mg aliquots of the same sample (TOC=TC-TIC). DOC can be determined by injection of sample into the analyzer. Because the instrument is based on coulometry, calibration is not required. Reproducibility is generally better that ±1%.
