(A) LED scanning apparatus. A plane of LED light (broken line) is projected onto the surface so that it intercepts the canopy at a 90o angle. The reflection off the surface is detected by a digital camera (cam.) oriented 44o to the canopy at a distance of 8.4 cm that is interfaced to a computer with image processing software. Canopies are mounted on a sliding measuring device to allow displacement in the x-direction. All scans are made in a darkened room. (B) The LED scanner is a modified commercial barcode scanner (LS1900 Series LED, Symbol Technologies Inc., Holtsville, NY, 2001).
