India Faculty Exchange Program

The Program

• Union College has had a Faculty Exchange Program with a confederation of colleges affiliated with Mumbai University since 1998.  The colleges are members of the Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board (HSNCB) and are located on many campuses throughout Bombay.

• Union Faculty with interests in the following areas are eligible for this program:  economics, history, political science, psychology, and sociology/anthropology.

• Union faculty spend about one week to ten days in Bombay making a number of one-hour presentations to groups of undergraduates at several colleges.  There may be other activities as well, such as workshops for smaller groups of faculty and students, participation in academic events, etc. 

Timing

• UNION FACULTY IN BOMBAY.  A nine to ten-day window during any of the following time periods:
  

  • November 20-December 20.  This is the most desirable for many reasons.

  • July 1-September 15

  • January 2-January 15

  • Term ends April 30.

  A typical scenario would be to arrive in Bombay on a Saturday, and leave 9 or 10 days later.
  

• HSNCB FACULTY AT UNION
  

  • HSNC Board faculty spend one term at Union (normally during the Spring Term).  They normally teach two courses related to aspects of Indian/South Asian culture, history, politics, economics, etc.

Application Procedure for Union Faculty

• If you would like to participate in this program, please e-mail Eshragh Motahar (motahare@union.edu), providing the following information:
  

  • your proposed dates, with alternative dates, if you wish,

  • a very brief description of four to six topics on which you would like to make presentations,

  • after consideration and approval by the Coordinating Committee, your name will then be put in the queue.

• COSTS.  Union covers the cost of a round-trip economy-class ticket from Albany to Bombay for the visiting Union faculty (spouses are not covered).  While in Bombay, the faculty (and spouse) will be housed in a guesthouse with a resident cook.  The guesthouse and meals therein are free of charge.  All local transportation in connection with official duties will be covered.  Any additional costs (such as travel within India, spouse-related costs, etc.) will be borne by the faculty.

• TRAVEL IN INDIA.  If you decide to travel in India before or after your official duties in Bombay, the local faculty will put you in touch with experienced travel agents in Bombay.
