HST-140:  America in the Cold War
Prof. Andrew Morris, Department of History

President John F. Kennedy and Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko meet at the White House, with former U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union Llewellyn Thompson (in middle) (October 18, 1962).

The stand-off between the United States and the Soviet Union permeated the politics and culture of the United States from the end of the Second World War through the early 1960s. This course will explore the origins of the Cold War, the terms on which it was fought, and the degree to which it imposed a political and cultural “consensus” on the United States.
