A Monkey Bite in the Amazon-Part 1

I spent today exploring the public health system in Recife while my professor and I searched for an anti-rabies vaccination.  My visit to the Ariaú Jungle Hotel in Amazonas was a positive experience overall, however I am somewhat disturbed with what happened to me.

Treatment for a Monkey Bite – Part 2

  As Martha, Beth, our travel guide, and I began our journey to the nearest clinic in search of the anti-rabies vaccination, I felt calm and as if what we were about to do was routine.  I suppose these feelings were normal because, at that point, I was unaware of the chaos that lay ahead of me.  Yes, my tiny monkey bite hurt a bit, but I was not in any unbearable pain.  I imagined my destination to resemble a high-scale American hospital.  Little did I know that my day had just begun and that the journey would not come to an end until nine hours later.
