Planned labs for Astro 51:
Lab 1: (Indoors) Telescopes and spectroscopes
Lab 2: (Outdoors) Using the star and planet locator, and astrophotography with 35mm cameras (see articles on astrophotography)
Lab 3: (Outdoors) Using portable 6 inch reflecting telescopes (Two consecutive weeks)
Lab 4: (Indoors, backup lab if bad weather makes two weeks of lab 3 impossible) CLEA excercise on Hubble's law and observatory simulation
Please note that in the case of outdoor labs, we still meet in the usual room Olin 107 at the beginning of
lab period,
and that students are expected to help move and setup their equipment at the beginning of lab,
and to return it and put it away at the end.

Smoking and outdoor labs: please remember that even though we are outdoors,
your
smoking may bother other students. Please avoid smoking,
or if you absolutely must, then distance yourself from the group.

Calendar:
Sept 12, 13, 17: Labs 2A and 2B completed in Niskayuna. (All three sections).
If you missed lab this is not good, contact your lab instructor immediately.
Lab homework for 2A is due one week after performing your lab (turn in during next lab)
Lab 2B will be due Monday, Oct 1 for all sections.
If your photos did not come out,
you will base your answers
on the shared photos, available in
digital form.
Sept 19, 20, 24: Labs 1A, 1B will be done indoors (rain or shine!).
PLEASE read your lab instructions in advance. For labs 2A,2B we found
many
students hadn't read the instructions and this cut down our efficiency.
Lab reports for W, Th sections, lab 1A,1B are due friday, Sept 28.
Report on 1A,1B for monday section due Wednesday, Oct 3.
Sept 26, 27, Oct 1: Lab 3, if good weather (no lab if bad weather)
